  1. To remove the spark arrestor, allow the chainsaw to cool if you have been using it for a while. You may set it on a level surface.
  2. Pull off the plug wire of the spark arrestor to prevent any accident that may cause serious injury.
  3. Identify the muffler. It is mostly on the engine housing behind any of the two louvered covers. Usually, the muffler is on the housing front behind a small cover. The larger cover of the engine is the air intake port.
  4. Unscrew the cover using a screwdriver. Some may have placed hex or Torx screws.
  5. Remove the cover and see the spark arrestor featuring a fine mesh screen attached to the engine housing. Pull off the screen or check if there is another screw to unscrew and release.

Cleaning a Spark Arrestor

Cleaning a spark arrestor is in 2 ways.

The design of the spark arrestor is to hold up the heat coming from the engine.

You can clean easily a dirty spark arrestor using a blowtorch.

It requires you to hold the spar arrestor using long pliers or tongs and to burn the oil and carbon debris off.

If you do not have a blowtorch, use a carburetor cleaning and loosen the debris.

Using a carb cleaner allows you to rinse the spark arrestor properly and dry it well before reinstalling it onto the vehicle.

It requires a cleanout plug, snaps ring, removable end cleanout, or removable end cap.

A cleanout featuring removable is secure to the muffler using a retaining band or a few screws that help shake out the particles if any.

  • The exhaust system should be between the spark arrestor and the engine in good condition.

Check the plug, if there is gunk on the electrode, and clean it.
