Here are some basic guidelines to sharpen a chain with a file to keep your chainsaw in top working order. If you are doing this for the first time, it is helpful to have someone experienced show you what to do to avoid mistakes.

Step 1) You need to take the chain off the saw to work on it. This is done by pushing the tensioner back with your hand or a special tool, then pushing the sprocket wheel forward to take the chain off.

A chainsaw chain file is used to sharpen a chain for use after it gets dulled. Use the side of the file to take off about an eighth of an inch of the chainsaw chain. You will have to use the side of the file to move back and forth to take the chain off.
