First of all, a chainsaw chain is a dangerous tool in the hands of a novice. I would recommend only a few people to use a chainsaw, so you should be familiar with chainsaw safety. That being said, if the chain is tangled the best thing that you can do is to stop using the saw. In order to avoid injury that could result from a tangled chain, you should stop using the saw and try to untangle the chain when you have a minute. However if you can't stop using the saw for whatever reason, there is a way to untangle a chainsaw and get back to work.

If you get a chainsaw chain too tangled you either have to cut off the tangled part or cut the entire length off. If you cut off the tangled part, there may be enough left to re-use. There are basically two chainsaw chain sizers, one clamping device that will squeeze the chain through an opening in the other, the other two are pins that separate the links enough for you to pull links out.

If it is a gas chainsaw, you'll need to pull the spark plug wire out of the plug, then fire it up. You need to wear safety glasses or goggles, since nothing will slow this monster down. It will chew through the chain like butter, and if any of the cutters get in the wrong place, it will chew you up like a box of Tic Tacs. Especially if you are wearing your favorite shirt, or your favorite face. Or both.
